It is located in the west central part of the Andean highlands, at an altitude of 3657 meters. We are in the heart of the wild altiplano, in the middle of arid scenery, surrounded by volcanoes that punctuate the nearby Chilean border. We spend the night in Sabaya (basic comfort).
Sabaya - Chullpas de Lauca - Sajama
We head south through the country to Urus Chipaya, following sandy and treacherous dirt roads. After crossing Río Lauca, we can see some polychromatic chullpas, the most beautiful ones of Bolivia (chullpas were tombs of the Aymara lords; pre-Inca time). We reach Sajama National Park in the afternoon after a 5 to 6-hour journey. Lodging with local host (basic comfort).
Sajama - Gueisers - Tomarapi
Morning visit to the geysers of Walla Keris. This particularly active area offers a unique display of bubbling baths spread over hundreds of square meters at the foot of the volcano Sajama, revered by the local population (about a 2 hour walk). In the afternoon we keep on walking to Laguna Huaña Khota, where flamingoes sometimes come to mix with the ducks and wild geese. In Tomarapi the wildlife is abundant and varied: alpacas, vicuñas and ñandus (similar to an ostrich). Night in the new shelter «Albergue» (comfort of a 2-star hotel).
Tomarapi - Curahuara de Carangas - La Paz
In the morning, we get back on the dirt road and head for the abandoned village. Option to do a short hike in the rocky chaos, before returning to the international road. On the way, we stop in the village of Curahuara de Carangas, well known for its well-adorned colonial church (perfectly preserved frescoes). Further on, we discover the chullpas, carangas sepultures, empty today after their systematic pillaging. Ends at 19:00 pm in La Paz.
